Report: Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier hired by Chargers

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback coach Doug Nussmeier is headed to Los Angeles to join the Chargers staff, according to ESPN’s Dianna Russini on Tuesday.

Russini reported that Nussmeier had multiple options but ultimately, he’s joining the Chargers where Kellen Moore is now the offensive coordinator. He will coach first-round quarterback Justin Herbert, among others in L.A.

Nussmeier was among eight 2022 staff members who did not get their contracts renewed for another season. He was the Cowboys’ quarterbacks coach for three years. However, after a down year from Dak Prescott, which saw him notch a career-high in interceptions, the team opted to part ways.

Earlier this month, Nussmeier interviewed to become the Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator. However, he was not part of the second-round interviews. He was also reconsideration for the quarterback job for the Jets.

Cowboys move on from Moore, Nussmeier

Dallas and Mike McCarthy still have plenty to work through to replenish the staff for 2023. However, they announced Kellen Moore’s replacement earlier this month.

The franchise announced that long-time NFL assistant Brian Schottenheimer is now the offensive coordinator on Mike McCarthy’s staff in 2023. However, McCarthy is retaining play-calling duties.

Along with the announcement, McCarthy released a statement, where he elaborated on how exuberant he is to have Schottenheimer as his right-hand man on offense.

“I am very happy to have Brian take on this key role with our team. He has been an important part of our staff already and has a great grasp of where we are and where we want to go,” said McCarthy, per the franchise. “Brian also has an exceptionally strong foundation, history and relationships beyond his time here that translate very well into understanding what our approach to operating and executing will be for the future.

“This will be an exciting and efficient transition for us that I am confident will help yield the growth and results we all want and expect.”

Moreover, Schottenheimer has been an offensive coordinator at multiple stops in the NFL, beginning with the New York Jets (2006-2011) to the St. Louis Rams (2012-2014) and most recently the Seattle Seahawks (2018-2020). In between, he spent time at the collegiate level, serving as the offensive coordinator of the Georgia Bulldogs in 2015.
