Former Packers tight end Tyrone Davis passes away at 50 years old

Tyrone Davis, former Green Bay Packers tight end during their Super Bowl XXXII appearance, has passed away at the age of 50. Davis played for the Packers from 1997-2002 and died earlier this month according to an obituary shared from South Boston, Virginia.

The former Packers player was a star for the Virginia Cavaliers in college, earning him a selection with the 107th overall pick of the 1995 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. After two seasons with the Jets, Davis joined the Packers and continued to make an impact as a touchdown-threat throughout his career. He finished his NFL career with 73 receptions for 795 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Davis appeared in 69 games for the Packers and started 27, serving as the starting tight end for the team in 1999 and part of the 2000 season. Davis also appeared in seven playoff games, including Super Bowl XXXII where the Packers fell to the Denver Broncos as John Elway won his first Super Bowl.

Davis was also involved in a milestone moment for Packers legend Brett Favre, as he caught Favre’s 200th career touchdown pass against the New York Giants.

In his four years with Virginia before joining the NFL ranks, Davis racked up yards and touchdowns as a big-play threat. He finished his college career ranked second in yards per catch in ACC history with 20.9 yards per reception. Davis caught passes for 2,153 yards and 28 touchdowns — making him the school’s leading receiving touchdown grabber in program history. His 28 touchdown catches ties him for seventh-best in ACC history as well.

According to the obituary released, Davis’ funeral was held on Oct. 8 — as the former Virginia star passed away from an undisclosed illness.
