Former LSU star defensive lineman Tyler Shelvin will miss the rest of the Cincinnati Bengals’ offseason program with a wrist injury, the franchise’s head coach Zac Taylor revealed a few weeks ago. He’d been missing Bengals’ workouts during the summer already because of the injury. The good news is Taylor said Shelvin isn’t seriously injured, per a report from Josh Alper of ProFootballTalk.

The former LSU Tiger was selected by the Bengals in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He needed what the Bengals’ head coach called a “slight procedure” performed on his wrist by doctors. The team still expects him to be fully recovered and healthy for the start of training camp this fall.

Shelvin is not the only Bengal from their 2021 draft class to undergo surgery recently. Former third-round selection Joseph Ossai also went under the knife a few months ago. Like Shelvin, Ossai is expected to be fully healthy and ready to go for training camp. The former Texas Longhorn missed his rookie season during the 2021-2022 season with a knee injury.

Shelvin played in three regular season games last year for the Bengals as a rookie, and also made two more appearances in the postseason during their run to the Super Bowl. The 6-foot-3, 346-pound defensive tackle racked up four tackles for the entire year.

While at LSU, the mammoth defensive tackle wrapped up his career there with 48 career tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Shelvin appeared in 21 games, starting 14 of those in two years of action with the Bayou Bengals.

According to the On3 Consensus Rankings for the 2017 cycle, Shelvin was rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 3 defensive lineman prospect in America. He was one of the most highly touted prospects in the country coming out of high school and suited up in the Under Armour All-America Game–racking up five tackles, and one tackle for loss. He played his high school football at Notre Dame High School (Lafayette, La.), where he also played on their basketball team. His senior year, Shelvin was selected to the All-USA Louisiana first team defense.
