Former LSU star 'has chance' to make NFL debut this weekend

Former LSU safety Grant Delpit has a chance to make his NFL debut for the Cleveland Browns on Sunday against the Houston Texans.

“#Browns DC Joe Woods said S Grant Delpit (hamstring) has started to take team reps,” Browns writer Scott Petrak reported. “Hoping he can play a few snaps Sunday.”

Grant Delpit was drafted in the second round of 2020 NFL Draft by the Browns after a productive career at LSU. Delpit spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve after suffering a ruptured right Achilles tendon during training camp.

As Delpit began his return to the field over the offseason, the safety suffered another setback, missing the last two weeks of practice with a sore hamstring.

Prior to missing two weeks, Delpit participated in just nine reps, due to the Achilles protocol.

Grant Delpit is expected to be a key member of the Browns secondary rotating with safeties Ronnie Harrison Jr. and John Johnson III. Johnson joined the Browns this offseason via free agency after four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson signed a three-year, $33.75 million deal with the Browns

Former LSU teammate, and current Cleveland teammate Greedy Williams has been rehabbing alongside Delpit. Williams suffered a nerve injury in his shoulder and missed the entire 2020 season. As Williams and Delpit rehabbed together, Williams suffered a setback of his own, suffering a groin injury in the Browns second preseason game.

At LSU, Grant Delpit won the Thorpe Award in 2019 and was a two-time first team All-America in 2018 and 2019. Delpit was honored with the No. 7 jersey in 2019. The No. 7 in LSU football has been passed down to some of the recent greats in the program including the likes of Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette, and DJ Chark.

In his career, Delpit played in 40 games and started 37. In three seasons, Delpit finished with 199 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks and eight interceptions.

As a junior, Delpit was a key member of the 2019 undefeated national championship LSU team. Delpit recorded 65 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two interceptions and nine passes deflected.

Coming out of high school, Grant Delpit was originally from Lamar High school in Houston, but transferred to Florida powerhouse IMG Academy for his senior season. At IMG, Delpit recorded 47 tackles, five interceptions, six pass breakups and one tackle for loss.
