Former NFL and Oregon tight end Russ Francis was killed in a plane crash at Lake Placid Airport on Sunday. The New York Post reported the news. He was 70.

Per the report, Francis “was in a plane with Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s senior vice president Richard McSpadden when it experienced problems shortly after takeoff around 4 p.m.” Francis and McSpadden, who also died in the accident, attempted to return to the airport but were unable to reach the runway.

Francis played in the NFL for 14 seasons, suiting up for two teams. He played for the New England Patriots (1975-80, 1987-89) and the San Francisco 49ers (1982-87). Francis was a three-time Pro Bowler and won a Super Bowl in his career.

The tight end decided to retire after the 1980 season with the Patriots. After a year away, he joined the 49ers in 1982. He then ended his career where it started — New England.

Francis played in 167 career games and totaled 5,262 receiving yards and caught 40 touchdown passes on 393 receptions. He was a first-round pick out of Oregon, selected by the Patriots at No. 16 overall.

NFL historian Kevin Gallagher posted a video tribute of Francis on Monday after hearing of the tragic news.

San Francisco 49ers legend Jesse Sapolu was one of many who took to Twitter to remember his friend and teammate.

Saddened by the news of the passing of former (49er), (Patriots) and (Polynesian Football Hall of Famer) Russ Francis,” Sapolu wrote. “RIP big bro.”

Patriots team owner Robert Kraft also issued a statement following the devastating news.

“On behalf of the entire New England Patriots organization, we extend our sincerest sympathies to the family of Russ Francis, who tragically passed away yesterday,” the statement said. “Russ was a fan favorite throughout his playing career. He was a dynamic player on the field who had an even bigger personality off of it. He knew no boundaries, pushed the limits and lived his life to the fullest.

“Our thoughts are with Russ’s family, friends, teammates and many Patriots fans who mourn his loss.”
