Some names are a little more common than others. The name Cam Ward, for instance, has at least a pair of professional athletes who have had that for their name.

One of the proverbial Cam Wards was just selected first overall in the NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. The other is a former NHL goalie who had a bit of surprise watching from the coach when he heard his name get called. Luckily, he recorded himself for the reaction.

The video shows Cam Ward sitting watching the TV in the dark. He appears to be calm or even a little bit bored while the NFL Draft can be heard in the background. That’s when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell comes on and announces Cam Ward is the first overall pick. At the same time, goalie Ward is clearly taken aback before asking the camera, “Did I just get picked?”

There was a time when the city of Nashville would have liked Cam Ward as a goalie. A first round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in 2002, Ward went on to become one of the better goalies in hockey and even made the 2011 All-Star Game. At the same time, Titans fans would probably prefer the quarterback and not the 41-year-old goalie if pressed.

Certainly, there is a lot of excitement about Ward the quarterback, and with good reason. Ward spent his final college season with the Miami Hurricanes. He’d previously transferred into the program from Washington State and Incarnate Word. In that final college season, Ward completed 67.2 percent of his passes for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also rushed for 204 yards and another four touchdowns. There is clear upside there and something for the Titans to build around.

Former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum reminded of Josh Allen when watching Cam Ward

It’s never a surprise for a draft-eligible star, especially a quarterback, to get compared to an NFL star. It’s a way for fans to understand what to kind of expect from players at the next level. Cam Ward received plenty of those comparisons, including a bold one from former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum that compared him to Josh Allen.

“There’s a ruggedness to the way Cam Ward plays that really reminds me of Josh Allen,” Tannenbaum said. “The arm strength and coming out, they both had similar yards per attempt and rushing yards. The athleticism of Cam Ward is very underrated as was Josh Allen’s. In Tennessee, they may be getting a star.”
