Former Ole Miss, NFL defensive lineman Jerrell Powe arrested for kidnapping
Former NFL and Ole Miss defensive lineman Jerrell Powe was arrested Thursday in Mississippi, on charges of kidnapping, according to the New York Post. He is still in jail at the Madison County Detention Center as of Monday with no bail set.
The incident reportedly began in Laurel, Mississippi, when a man called police and told them he was kidnapped against his will and forced to withdraw money. Police responded, arriving at a Chase Bank where they arrested both Powe and 35-year-old Gavin Bates. The alleged victim is safe, according to authorities.
The 35-year-old Powe is scheduled to make an initial appearance before a judge on Tuesday. It is still unclear whether he will opt to have a lawyer speak for him.
After playing for Ole Miss from 2008-10, Powe was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs. He went on to spend five seasons in the league, three with the Chiefs and one each with the Houston Texans and Washington. Powe did not play a game during his final season in 2015 as he was a member of Washington’s practice squad.

Powe was part of two Cotton Bowl victories in his time at Ole Miss, finishing his career as a Rebel with 69 (24 for loss), seven sacks and one forced fumble. He was named second team All-SEC in both 2009 and 2010. In his NFL career, Powe recorded 18 tackles and one sack. His best season came in 2014 with the Texans, as he had 10 tackles and one pass break up across 16 games with three starts.
Investigators are still gathering facts on the kidnapping that Jerrell Powe was involved in. They also said that more charges in addition to the kidnapping are possible, especially with the evidence that Powe was trying to take money from the victim.
