Fresh off of his six-year tenure as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans, Mike Vrabel is getting a shot at taking over another NFL franchise. The Los Angeles Chargers reportedly interviewed Vrabel for the open head coaching job on Thursday, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Vrabel was fired after leading the Titans to a 6-11 record this past season. Tennessee went 7-10 in 2022. In six seasons, he tallied an overall record of 54-45 with three postseason appearances.

Tennessee went 9-7 in each of his first two seasons, reaching the AFC Championship Game in 2019. In 2020, the Titans went 11-5, before losing in the first round of the playoffs. In 2021, Tennessee entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the AFC after winning 12 regular season games, before falling at home to the Bengals in the playoffs.

Before getting into coaching, Vrabel won three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and is in the Patriots Hall of Fame. He played college football at Ohio State where he was twice named a first-team All-American. The former Pats star was named the NFL’s Coach of the Year in 2021.

The Los Angeles Chargers moved on from head coach Brandon Staley before the end of the 2023 regular season after the Raiders beat them 63-21. Staley, 41, had a 24-24 record during his time in Los Angeles, and he only had one playoff appearance under his belt.

His tenure started with a 9-8 mark in 2021 and he made his first playoff appearance in 2022 with a 10-7 record. In the AFC Wild Card game, they led the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-0. However, that lead evaporated, and Los Angeles eventually fell 31-30. That sent Staley into his third season under major scrutiny.

Harbaugh meets with Chargers

Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday. After winning a national championship this past season with the Wolverines, Harbaugh is weighing a return to the league. He previously spent four seasons in the NFL, compiling a 44-19-1 record and taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

The Chargers are also on record setting up interviews with multiple other candidates including Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. Quinn will interview with L.A. on Friday. They’ve also interviewed former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. Lions coordinator Ben Johnson will interview with the Chargers on Saturday, after interviews with the Panthers and Commanders on Friday.
