Former Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond cut by Minnesota Vikings

With a wave of NFL roster moves coming in as the preseason ends, Minnesota Viking backup QB Kellen Mond is the latest player to be out of a job this morning.

After drafting him in last year’s NFL Draft, the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero says the franchise has elected to waive the former Aggie QB from the roster.

A third-round pick out of Texas A&M in 2021, Mond had a lot of fans in the pre-draft process. But he struggled in preseason action and Minnesota's new regime traded for Nick Mullens recently. Now, Mond heads to waivers.

Mond only threw three passes for five yards during one game for the Vikings last year. He had played okay in Minnesota’s 2022 preseason games, though, with no real flashes. Mond threw for a 56.9% completion percentage for 303 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In the end, it wasn’t enough to keep his spot on the roster.

Minnesota drafted Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft after four years in College Station. During his career at Texas A&M, Mond threw for over 9,600 yards and rushed for an additional 1,609. He totaled 71 touchdowns with his arm and 22 more with his legs.

With several roster moves being made, Mond may find his way back to a roster or practice squad once a team realizes they’re in need of a quarterback. Even so, Mond’s NFL career is now on hold for the time being.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond made his presence felt in the preseason opener on Sunday against Las Vegas. With his team trailing by two possessions late in the fourth quarter, Mond stepped back to throw a 20-yard touchdown pass that fell right into the hands of Albert Wilson.

The pass completed what was a perfect drive for Mond, as he went 5-for-5 for 71 yards. It also brought the Vikings within one touchdown, cutting the Raiders lead to 26-20.

The Vikings selected Kellen Mond in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft last offseason. He did not make his NFL debut until Week 17 when starter Kirk Cousins was out due to COVID-19. Mond served as the backup to Sean Mannion in that game against Green Bay, finishing 2-of-3 passing for five yards.

Prior to his pro career, Mond was a former three-year starter at Texas A&M and led the Aggies to a 9-1 record and Orange Bowl victory as a senior. He finished his college career as the school’s all-time leading passer with 9,661 yards in addition to 71 touchdowns.

This year, Mond once again comes in at third on the Vikings depth chart behind Cousins and Mannion, the latter of whom started Sunday. However, Kellen Mond will have a chance to get some valuable reps this preseason and Sunday’s game was certainly a good start for him.
