There isn’t a hotter driver on the NASCAR Cup Series circuit right now than Martin Truex Jr. The 42-year-old just won his second race of the season, taking the checkered flag at Sonoma for the fourth time in his career.

With the victory, Truex has now finished in the top-five in each of the last three races and has placed inside the top 10 four times in the last five regular season events. Talk about a hot streak.

Following Truex’s big win on Sunday, FOX NASCAR analyst Bob Pockrass released his latest top-10 power rankings in the Cup Series. Here’s how he’s got them lined up following the race at Sonoma:

  1. Martin Truex Jr.
  2. Kyle Larson
  3. Kyle Busch
  4. William Byron
  5. Denny Hamlin
  6. Ross Chastain
  7. Christopher Bell
  8. Ryan Blaney
  9. Joey Logano
  10. Chris Buescher

How does that compare to the current Cup Series standings? Truex sits at the top of both rankings, but the rest is a bit more jumbled:

  1. Martin Truex Jr. – 525 points
  2. William Byron – 512 points
  3. Ryan Blaney – 501 points
  4. Ross Chastain – 501 points
  5. Kevin Harvick – 500 points
  6. Kyle Busch – 496 points
  7. Christopher Bell – 493 points
  8. Denny Hamlin – 462 points
  9. Joey Logano – 444 points
  10. Kyle Larson – 440 points

The NASCAR Cup Series schedule is more than halfway through the regular season. Things are starting to tighten up as the playoffs approach.

It should make for some fun racing down a pivotal stretch.

Martin Truex Jr.’s crew chief talks big win at Sonoma

There’s really no other way to put it, Truex has dominated Sonoma Raceway. He won the road course event for the fourth time in his career on Sunday, flexing his muscle at the track.

Monday, Truex’s crew chief, James Small, said it’s exactly what the No. 19 team expected when at Sonoma.

“When you go to Sonoma with Martin Truex, you expect to win or run really well,” Small said on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “We’ve done that over the last number of years. But last year was just G** d*** awful, so it was embarrassing. We didn’t want to go back and run that poorly again.

“You need to be perfect to win these races and the guys did a fantastic job across the board on pit road. Martin did a great job. It was just executing … and it enabled us to stay up front and stay in control all day.”

Truex blew away the competition on Sunday, making for a relatively uninteresting finish to the race. But it has made for an interesting situation in the points standings, with the No. 19 driver sitting atop the Cup Series currently.

Next week, NASCAR heads to Nashville for the Ally 400.
