Sony Michel signs new deal to return to L.A. Rams
Running back Sony Michel has a new home and he doesn’t even have to switch towns. After signing with the Los Angeles Chargers for the 2022 season and getting his release in December, Michel has now inked with the L.A. Rams.
The former Georgia Bulldog has already had one stint with the Rams but now he’s back for some more. He was on the team in 2021 when they won the Super Bowl. He had 208 carries, 845 yards and four scores in the regular season, adding another 26 carries and 80 yards in the postseason.
Last season for the Chargers, Michel posted 36 carries with 106 yards in 10 games with no touchdowns.
Following his Super Bowl season with the Rams, Michel signed a one-year deal with Miami for $1.75 million. However, the Dolphins cut him before the season started.
Michel was planning on being a contributor in Miami for head coach Mike McDaniel. He was even going to wear the No. 34 and honor legendary running back Ricky Williams. Instead, the Dolphins decided to put him on the open market and he landed with the Chargers.
Michel signs second contract with Rams
Drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Michel spent three seasons with the New England Patriots before they traded him to the Rams in 2021.

He didn’t surpass 1,000 yards while in New England but got close in both 2018 and 2019. His career high was as a rookie with 931 yards and six touchdowns. He added another 336 yards and six touchdowns in the postseason.
Despite having spent just five seasons in the league, Michel has two Super Bowl rings.
With the Rams, the 28-year-old is joining four other running backs on the roster. Those running backs are Cam Akers, Kyren Williams, Ronnie Rivers and rookie sixth-rounder Zach Evans.
Los Angeles won a Super Bowl just a season ago but their fortunes took a turn around the same time Michel left. They went 5-12 and finished third in the division just one win ahead of the Arizona Cardinals. The Rams added 14 new faces via the 2023 NFL Draft, starting with offensive lineman Steve Avila to help pave the road for Michel and the other backs.
Earlier this month, the team signed free-agent wide receiver Demarcus Robinson. Robinson posted 458 receiving yards last season while playing with the Kansas City Chiefs.
