Michael McDowell announced Wednesday he is leaving Front Row Motorsports after the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season, bringing an end to his seven-year tenure with the race team.

Front Row Motorsports owner Bob Jenkins issued a statement on McDowell’s decision to depart the race team.

“We thank Michael for all he has done during his time as a driver at Front Row Motorsports,” Jenkins said. “His 2021 Daytona 500 victory, a dominant win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and two appearances in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs set a new standard for our organization. He became the leader of his team and the organization. Outside the car, he was the model for a driver we want to represent us and our partners.”

“We’re sad to see Michael leave, but wish him, Jami and his family nothing but the best as he moves on to another chapter of what is already an incredible racing career.”

McDowell, 39, is expected to sign with Spire Motorsports, per Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. Joining Front Row in 2018, McDowell initially struggled to find speed before having a breakout season in 2021. He won his first career Cup Series race — the Daytona 500 — and finished 16th in the points standings. McDowell got back into victory lane this past season at the Brickyard road course, clinching his second career playoff berth. He finished 15th the points standings.

Through 12 races this season, McDowell has tallied three top 10s, finishing a season-best P8 at Atlanta and Phoenix. Though he’s qualified well, earning poles at Atlanta and Talladega, McDowell has had trouble finishing races with four DNFs. Following a six-race stretch in which he finished P31 or worse four times, he finished P10 in this past Sunday’s race at Kansas.

“To FRM’s loyal and dedicated fanbase, l’m grateful for your messages of encouragement and support during my tenure with the team – it’s been an awesome ride,” McDowell said. “To the incredible partners that I’ve been privileged to work with, thank you for trusting me to represent each of your companies, both on and off the race track. I wish you all nothing but success for many years to come.

“… Rest assured, there’s still a lot of racing left this season, and I’m fully committed to doing whatever it takes to get FRM another win and another playoff berth. We’re not slowing down until the checkered flag flies in Phoenix. I look forward to continue driving for many years to come and can’t wait to share my
future plans with you all soon.”
