George Foreman, boxing legend, dead at 76

One of the biggest legends in boxing history passed away on Friday. George Foreman, known for his legendary boxing ability, his charismatic personality, and his ascension to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world a second time, has died.

He was 76 years old when he died, and the news was relayed on Friday evening in an official statement from the family through his Instagram page. Foreman was also the face of the iconic George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine, an item that can be found in millions of Americans households across the country. Since its introduction in 1994, there have been over 100 million sold across the globe.

Foreman first came onto the scene in 1968 at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City, where he won a gold medal. At the age of 25 years old, he faced Muhammad Ali in 1974 in one of the most famous boxing events of all-time. It was dubbed, “The Rumble in The Jungle,” in Zaire. Ali stunned Foreman defeating him by TKO in the 8th round.

Foreman finished with 81 total fights in his career, posting an overall record of 76-5 (68 wins by knockout). He was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

No cause of death was officially announced, but he was described as having peacefully departed according to his loved ones. Here is the official statement released from the family through his Instagram account.

“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose,” the statement began.

“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight champion of the world. He was deeply respected–a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name–for his family,” the statement continued.

“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers, and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own,” the statement finished.
