ESPN insider Adam Schefter provided an injury update on Steelers receiver George Pickens on Monday. Pickens was held out of Sunday’s win over the Browns due to a hamstring injury.

Schefter shared insight into what led to that decision during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show Monday afternoon.

“Yea, well, I think they were absolutely planning on him playing,” Schefter said. “Mike Tomlin said before the game that he thought he was going to play. And I think what happened was he woke up Friday morning, it was tight.

“They held him out of practice Friday. He went through the walk-through on Saturday, and that was giving them the idea that he intended to play.”

It seems as though George Pickens was intending to play. However, the Steelers ultimately decided that the risk wasn’t worth the reward.

Pittsburgh performed well without Pickens, earning a 27-14 win over the Browns. The game was never in doubt.

“I think George absolutely intended to play,” Schefter said. “And then they met as a team before the game and ultimately I guess medical people prevailed there, like, ‘You know what? Let’s take the long-term view here. Let’s make sure we’re not pushing today. Let’s rest him on the hamstring. Hamstring injuries are usually multi-week injuries, and we’ll see if he can make it back this week or not.’

“But they decided that it was in his best long-term interest yesterday to hold him out of the game, and so that’s exactly what they did.”

Up next, the Steelers will play at the Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the George Pickens hamstring injury after Sunday’s win, sharing why he didn’t suit up.

“We didn’t feel like he was going to be able to play the type of number of snaps that we thought would be worth putting him in a uniform,” Tomlin said, according to ESPN. “To be quite honest with you, we didn’t want a small problem to become a big problem, and so we put a helmet on Scotty Miller, and as you can see, most of the time when you put the helmets on the healthy guys, man, they take care of the rest.”
