PITTSBURGH, PA - AUGUST 13: George Pickens #14 of the Pittsburgh Steelers makes a catch for a 26-yard touchdown reception as Coby Bryant #8 of the Seattle Seahawks defends in the first quarter during a preseason game at Acrisure Stadium on August 13, 2022 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. George Pickens‘ first reception of Week 3’s Thursday Night Football game against the Cleveland Browns was one so spectacular that it would make you throw your controller in anger if it was made in a video game.

The one-handed snag was made with a swarm of Browns defenders around him. Certainly a way to silence the crowd in Cleveland. The play eventuated ended up in a short touchdown rush from running back Najee Harris. The subsequent PAT tied the game at seven a piece.

The play comes as no surprise to those who followed his college career at Georgia. When healthy, Pickens was one of the most reliable, explosive and exciting offensive players in the country. It seems those traits have carried over to the pro’s.

Diontae Johnson on rookie receiver, former Georgia standout George Pickens: ‘He’s a freak’

If Pittsburgh Steelers fans weren’t excited about second-round pick George Pickens before, they definitely are after seeing him shine in the first preseason game versus the Seahawks. The former Georgia star had five targets, which he converted into a three-catch, 43-yard performance. He also caught a ball for a 26-yard touchdown from backup quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Pickens’ teammate Diontae Johnson praised the rookie wideout after the game.

“He’s a freak, that’s what he is,” Johnson said, via Sports Illustrated’s All Steelers. “He’s a freak. That’s a special talent. You can’t teach some of the things he does. I just be watching like, man, I be amazed at how he catches the ball sometimes. He’s young. He’s getting better on the daily.”

The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Pickens with the 52nd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound wide receiver battled injuries at Georgia but he showed enough to lock himself in as an early-round pick, and now it’s paying off in the NFL.
