Giants HC Brian Daboll explains benching Daniel Jones for Tommy DeVito, names Drew Lock backup
The New York Giants have decided to bench Daniel Jones, confirming an earlier report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter that they’ll be rolling with Tommy DeVito as their starting quarterback moving forward.
Brian Daboll made the news official on Monday afternoon, via a statement released via the team’s official account on X. Veteran Drew Lock will actually be DeVito’s backup, as Jones, who possesses a hefty injury guarantee in his contract, will be demoted to the third-string for the time-being.
“We are making a quarterback switch from Daniel Jones to Tommy DeVito,” Daboll announced, via X. “After evaluating and watching a lot of tape, that’s the reason we are going with Tommy. Drew Lock will be the backup.
“This was a necessary move for us and I’m looking forward to working with Tommy and he’ll be ready to go against Tampa Bay.”
While it’s a massive opportunity for DeVito, the move likely signals the end of Jones’ time in New York. His tenure with the Giants has been tenuous, as he’s delivered uneven play throughout his career in the Big Apple, and his struggles finally caught up to him.

Through 10 games this season, Jones has accumulated 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 63.3% completion percentage to go along with a 2-8 record. He was originally drafted with the No. 6 overall pick in 2019 out of Duke, and presumed to be the franchise quarterback following Eli Manning.
All in all, Jones is 24-44-1 in his career as a starting quarterback for the Giants. To sum it up, he has 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, 47 interceptions and a 64.1% completion percentage.
Time will tell what his NFL future holds, but it likely won’t be in New York under Brian Daboll’s tutelage any longer. Daniel Jones will more than likely be cut, and the Giants will be looking for a new signal-caller come 2025.
