The Giants-Packers game prompted so many social media memes, with most of them Sopranos related because of quarterback Tommy DeVito‘s New Jersey family and Italian heritage.

DeVito’s agent even inspired his own memes. He was wearing a three-piece, monotone black suit with gold accents. When rookie “Tommy Cutlets” did well, the agent would kiss DeVito’s dad. And the accouncers would mention how DeVito lives at home with his parents. The house is close to MetLife Stadium. And the DeVitos look like the perfect Italian-American family from Jersey.

Giants chose Eddie Murphy reference rather than Sopranos

But rather than going with anything Sopranos related, the Giants playfully trolled the Packers by kicking it back to 1988. Because that’s when Eddie Murphy predicted a Giants win over the Packers in his hit comedy, Coming to America.

We’ll explain. First, here’s the social media post:

Coming to America is a beloved classic that makes you laugh decades later. Murphy is Akeem, the crown prince of Zamunda. He comes to America with Seemi, portrayed by Arsenio Hall. Akeem wants to fall in love and not marry the woman his father picks out for him.

Akeem finds a job at McDowell’s, a knockoff of McDonalds. And he has a conversation with Cleo (John Amos), the owner, about watching football.

“Did you happen to catch the professional football contest on television last night?” Akeem asks his boss. “The Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big H. It was a most ripping victory.”

And that’s what the Giants did at home in the Meadowlands during a Monday Night Football double offering.

Moments after the Packers took the lead. DeVito, the rookie, calmly led the Giants down the field to set up a field goal try. The kick split the uprights as time expired, giving New York an improbable, 24-22 victory. It was their fifth win of the season. The Packers dropped to 6-7. but still are holding onto playoff hosts. They’re currently the seventh and final seed.

The Giants have won three straight games. They’ll take their act to the Big Easy where they’ll take on the New Orleans Saints the Super Dome. Meanwhile, the Packers hope to get back on track at home against the Bucs.
