Golf Channel mistakes pro-am golfer for Vince Young in awkward interview
Some big-name stars are participating in the BMW Charity Pro-Am this week. Former Texas quarterback Vince Young is certainly one of them and for a moment, Golf Channel thought they were interviewing him while walking down the fairway.
Only issue? The reporter misidentified the person she was speaking to, thinking Young was to her right. Instead, Everette Sands, an assistant football coach for the Citadel, was the one being interviewed. A mistake leading to an incredibly awkward moment.
The interview began by listing out some of the accomplishments Young has had, calling the former Texas star “arguably one of the best quarterbacks” in college football history before discussing his NFL career. Sands let the reporter finish the question before informing her that he is, in fact, not Vince Young.
“Now, I apologize,” Sands said. “But you have the wrong person. I’m Everette Sands of the Citadel. Which, I’m a football coach.”
When the microphone was still in his area, Sands kept the interview rolling. In what was definitely an awkward moment, the Citadel assistant coach made the best of it.
“The great thing about golf is — I’m not only competing against myself but I’m competing against everybody else.”
You can check out the full moment here. Some nice thinking on the fly from Sands might have saved us from an even more awkward moment.

Sands played his college football at the Citadel, with his official coaching bio calling him “one of the best to ever wear the Bulldog uniform.” He just recently returned to the school after coaching elsewhere and his official title is Offensive Skill Specialist. Famous around Charleston and now thanks to the Golf Channel, around the country too.
Later, in an interview with a local Charleston television station, Sands revealed he has not since talked to the reporter who conducted the interview. He did get to discuss what happened with Young and show him the video of the whole moment.
“I haven’t seen her,” Sands said about the reporter. “I waited so I could talk to Vince and tell him what happened. Then, probably 30 minutes later, my college roommates, the person who sent me the video of the live recording.”
A moment Sands will likely never forget, even if it’s for the awkwardness. Hopefully, he and Young were able to laugh about being confused for each other afterward. And maybe even share some stories with each other about their respective football careers.
