Aaron Rodgers calls out Lambeau Field crowd following Dallas win

The Green Bay Packers came into Sunday’s game versus the Dallas Cowboys on a five-game losing streak, which might explain why the crowd at Lambeau Field wasn’t as electric as quarterback Aaron Rodgers is used to.

Rodgers discussed the impact the crowd’s reactions had on the outcome and his surprise at seeing so many Cowboys fans in the stands as he recapped the 31-28 overtime win with the media.

“For whatever reason, there were a lot of Cowboys fans there tonight,” Rodgers said. “I don’t feel like it was the most energetic crowd that we’ve had. There were definitely some huge momentum swings. The touchdown to Christian, I feel like, got the crowd back in it, the first one. The same when we hit that one on fourth down. I felt like, ‘Oh, maybe they believe a little bit as well.”

“We’re creatures of habit and fans are as well. When they bring that energy, we feel it. We appreciate those little jolts and we’ll appreciate, maybe, more consistent jolts moving forward.”

Rodgers credited his coaching staff for the play call to go for it on 4th and 7 when the team was down by two scores in regulation. The quarterback tossed a dime to Christian Watson for a 39-yard touchdown and that lifted the team for the ensuing drive that also resulted in a TD pass to Watson – his third of the game.

“I loved going for it on fourth down,” Rodgers said. “He called a specific play that came to me on a Monday, and said ‘What do you think about this?’ And I said ‘Yeah.’ We blocked it up and I threw a touchdown. That kept us in it.”

Rodgers’ credit of the staff came despite clear disagreements between the star QB and head coach Matt LaFleur before end of regulation.

Cameras captured Rodgers in a heated exchange with LaFleur on the sidelines after Green Bay’s final drive of regulation, which ended with an incomplete pass forcing a punt. Asked postgame what he was so upset about, the quarterback gave a short, surly response

“Just every single play call, probably,” he said.

Pressed specifically about which play calls irked him, Rodgers explained. He told reporters that he “wanted a chance to go win the game” and disagreed with LaFleur’s decision to run the ball on second down. It appears he thought he could get the team within field goal range on the final drive and avoid going overtime.

“I feel like we were like 30 yards from ending the game in regulation,” he said. “Also felt like it was two minutes so I was gonna be calling those (plays). I was in a pretty good rhythm. Obviously didn’t have a ton of attempts tonight, but I felt like I was in a pretty good rhythm. Felt like I threw the ball just about exactly where I wanted tonight. So I wanted a chance to go win the game.”
