Green Bay Packers hope to reach extention with QB Jordan Love before training camp

In Jordan Love, the Packers employ one of the cheapest starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Team management is hopeful that they can work out a contract extension by the start of next month’s training camp.

This is according to Packers GM Brian Gutekunst, who told 97.3 The Game about the time line for Love, who led the team to the second round of the playoffs last season.

“We’re in those conversations right now,” Gutekunst said of the Love negotiations. “The nice part about this is none of these things are always easy or fast, but both parties want the same thing. We’d like to get this done before training camp for sure.

“Both parties want to get a contract extension done,” Gutekunst said. “Stability at that position really allows you to have some security with the way we build our team. We’re looking forward to getting that done, but it never goes fast.”

Without a new contract, Love will earn $11 million this season. Overall, his contract paid him an average of $13.5 million a year. If nothing changes, the Packers quarterback ranks 18th amongst all quarterbacks headed into this season.

But there is quarterback salary movement. A year ago, Joe Burrow ( $55 million), Justin Herbert ($52.5 million), Lamar Jackson ($52 million) and Jalen Hurts ($51 million) reset the market. Earlier this year, the Lions gave Jared Goff a new contract that pays him $53 million to make him second overall.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins and Tua Tagovailoa are talking new deal. Matthew Stafford wants one with the Rams. So does Trevor Lawrence with the Jaguars. And the Cowboys will need to work on a contract with Dak Prescott. All three of those quarterbacks are expected to surpass $50 million per year. (You can check out all the salaries here.)

So Love certainly looks like he’s in line for a huge pay increase. The Packers quarterback currently is sandwiched between Seattle’s Geno Smith ($25.5 million) and Las Vegas’ Gardner Minshew ($12.5 million). They’re generally above this year’s rookies and the quarterbacks selected in 2023. And, Love and company are all ahead of Brock Purdy, who is due almost $1 million this season.

After Aaron Rodgers left for the Jets, Love took over the Packers offense for the first time last year. He and a young group of receivers helped Green Bay upset the Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs. The season came to an end against the 49ers in the divisional round.

The Packers are wrapping up OTAs, with a mandatory minicamp set for June 11-13. Training camp begins July 22.
