The Green Bay Packers are not going to rush Jordan Love back from injury. Green Bay is re-signing quarterback Jake Dolegala, his agent told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Love had to get his shoulder checked out following Saturday’s preseason game.

All signs point to Love not being on track to return in time for Saturday’s game, and the Packers don’t want to expose him or Aaron Rodgers to a possible injury. If Green Bay did not sign Dolegala, Kurt Benkert would be the only available quarterback to play against the Jets on Saturday.

Dolegala has now had two stints with the Packers as well as two stints with the Patriots this year. He spent most of last year on the Patriots’ practice squad. Undrafted coming out of Central Connecticut, he has also spent time with the Bengals.

Evaluating Jordan Love injury

Following the Green Bay Packers opening preseason game, Jordan Love had to get his shoulder checked out.

The former first-round pick received the most action he’s seen since he was drafted on Sunday night against the Texans. He performed well, completing 12 of 17 passes for 122 yards, adding on a touchdown pass as well in a 26-7 loss.

The injury did not appear to be too serious. Love’s MRI came back clean and was not worried about his health after the conclusion of Sunday’s preseason game; instead, he said being held out was merely precautionary.

“Obviously, [I was sitting out for] precautionary reason,” Love said. “I think I’ll be ready to go next week.”

While Love didn’t practice on Monday, Packers coach Matt LaFleur echoed that sentiment.

“Jordan’s not going to go today,” LaFleur said. “He is feeling a lot better, but we’re going to be smart by it, too.”

It was an encouraging debut for Love, who is expected to be the future successor to Aaron Rodgers. With the reigning NFL MVP’s future in Green Bay murky, it’s vital that Love is able to get all the playing time in the preseason that he can. If things go according to plan, Rodgers’ back-up will sit the entirety of the regular season, and become the starting quarterback of the Packers the following year.
