Green Bay Packers signing QB Sean Clifford to practice squad
Sean Clifford is returning to the Green Bay Packers after being released by the team on Tuesday. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Packers are signing the young quarterback to the practice squad. He will be the team’s No. 3 QB behind Jordan Love and Malik Willis, a player the Packers traded for before the roster was cut down to 53.
According to Bill Huber of Sports Illustrated, the Packers were looking to bring back Clifford to the practice squad shortly after releasing him. Huber also said it’s possible Clifford could be the No. 2 quarterback until Willis learns the playbook and proves he can be the top backup for Love.
Clifford, 26, was selected by the Packers in the fifth round of last year’s draft. He played in two games in 2023 and completed one pass for 37 yards.
Sean Clifford gets praise from Matt LaFleur
“Sean is a guy that is really intelligent,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said after the team selected Clifford last year, per Pennlive.com. “He has played a lot of games. He’s got some athleticism. He is a natural thrower. All the things that we look for in quarterbacks, he possesses.

“We had him up here on a 30-visit and went through the meetings with him and were impressed by his football acumen and just his overall intelligence,” LaFleur added. “And, you know, looking forward to getting a chance to work with him come rookie minicamp.”
Earlier this year, Clifford spoke to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports about his rookie season. “It was fun. A lot of fun. I learned a lot,” Clifford said. “We weren’t a great team at the beginning of the year, I think everyone would say that. But we knew what we had and we overcame a lot of adversity.
“We lost four straight at one point, but we came back and started winning some big games. By the end of the year, we sneaked our way into the playoffs and made a run. We really had a chance to beat the 49ers. I know you all saw the outcome, but they’re a great team. At the end of the day, it was a toss up at the end of the game. We’ll be back next year with a vengeance. We’re all ready to attack 2024.”
