Heisman Trophy

More than a month of college football has passed and the Heisman Trophy picture is starting to become a bit clearer. There’s still a long way to go until December, when the winner will be announced, and FanDuel released the updated odds after a crazy Week 5 of action.

Colorado star Travis Hunter saw a big boost to his odds after his performance against UCF, going from +1700 last week all the way up to +500. That is tied with Miami quarterback Cam Ward, who is one of eight quarterbacks in the top 10. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty also moved into the top five after a massive performance.

A quarterback has won seven of the past eight Heisman Trophies but Hunter and Jeanty will look to change that this year. There are plenty of other players who are climbing up the odds, and with many games left to play, we’ll likely see some more changes in the next few weeks.

You can view the full list of odds to win the Heisman Trophy, according to FanDuel, below.

+220 — QB Jalen Milroe, Alabama

William McLelland-Imagn Images

Milroe ranks tied for second in the country with 18 total touchdowns, a number that is second only to Miami QB Cam Ward. However, Milroe’s numbers are made even more impressive when one considers that he has played one less game than Ward so far.

Now after leading Alabama to a 41-34 win against Georgia this past week, Milroe takes over the top spot in the Heisman odds for the first time this season. A dual-threat, he led the team with 119 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns, a number he has reached in every game so far.

+500 — QB Cam Ward, Miami

Ward has the Hurricanes off to their first 5-0 start in the past seven seasons as the offense ranks second in the FBS in both points and yards per game. He leads the country with 20 total touchdowns — including 18 through the air — and ranks No. 1 in the ACC with 1,782 passing yards.

The QB is completing a career-best 70% of his passes and is only seven touchdowns away from tying his career high of 25. He is a major reason why Miami is considered frontrunner to win the ACC and could be the first Heisman winner for the school since 1992.

+500 — CB/WR Travis Hunter, Colorado

Hunter made a statement Saturday against UCF, breaking out the Heisman pose after recording an interception in the second half. He also made several plays on offense in the 48-21 win against the Knights, finishing with nine catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.

What Hunter has done over the past two seasons in Boulder while playing both sides of the ball is something few players in the history of the sport have ever replicated. That in itself gives him one of the most compelling cases to take home the Heisman Trophy this season.

+1000 — RB Ashton Jeanty, Boise State

Hunter wasn’t the only player to break out the Heisman pose in Week 5. Jeanty also did so as he racked up 259 yards rushing and four touchdowns in a 45-24 rout of Washington State.

It marked the second time this season that Jeanty has surpassed the 200-yard mark as opposing defenses have been helpless to stop him. He leads the country by a wide margin with 845 yards and 13 touchdowns through the first four games. Perhaps the only thing going against his Heisman candidacy would be the Broncos’ strength of schedule, but if he keeps putting up these types of numbers even that might not matter.

+1800 — QB Dillon Gabriel, Oregon

The Oklahoma transfer has been among the most efficient quarterbacks in the country, completing an FBS-leading 81.5% of his passes with nine touchdowns to only one interception. He has spread the ball fairly evenly among his receivers, making the Ducks a dangerous aerial attack for opposing defenses.

Gabriel has passes for at least 3,000 yards in every full season of college football that he has played and looks well on his way to another this year. He’ll have to improve his touchdown numbers, however, if he hopes to catch some of the players above him in the Heisman odds.

+1800 — QB Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee

Iamaleava has gotten off to quite the start to his redshirt freshman season as he has thrown for 892 yards and seven touchdowns to two interceptions. He has come back down to earth a bit after throwing for 314 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener, but his talent is still evident.

In addition to his throwing abilities, Iamaleava has also made plays with his legs as he has 117 yards rushing and a touchdown. He’ll look to keep it going this coming week in a road game against Arkansas.

+2000 — QB Quinn Ewers, Texas

Sara Diggins/American-Statesman / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Ewers still ranks seventh in odds to win the Heisman Trophy despite having not played the past two weeks. The Longhorns QB has been dealing with an abdomen injury and will hopefully be able to return for the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma in two weeks.

He had thrown for 692 yards and eight touchdowns to two interceptions in the three games prior to his injury, including a win over defending national champion Michigan. He’ll need a strong performance over the rest of the year to catch up to the rest of the crowd after his injury.

+2000 — QB Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss

Dart’s odds took a massive hit this weekend as he fell from No. 2 last week down to tied for No. 7. The Rebels dropped their first game of the season to Kentucky as he scored just one touchdown, his lowest total of the season.

Dart feasted against lower level competition in the first four games to the tune of 15 total touchdowns as he threw for 1,554 yards. He’ll need to prove he can also play against SEC opponents if he hopes to climb back up this list.

+2500 — QB Carson Beck, Georgia

Beck had his highs and his lows Saturday as Georgia fell short to Alabama. He threw a pair of early interceptions as the Bulldogs were down 28-0 by the second quarter, but turned things around and almost led them to a comeback.

Ultimately, he threw his third interception of the game on the Crimson Tide 20-yard line with 43 seconds to go to seal the game. Beck has thrown for 1,119 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions so far this season.

+2500 — QB Cade Klubnik, Clemson

Alex Hicks Jr./USA TODAY Sports via Imagn Images

Believe it or not, Klubnik had the fourth-best QBR in the country according to ESPN at 89.1. After failing to score a touchdown in Week 1 against Georgia, he has scored a total of 16 over the next three games — all Clemson victories.

Many were ready to declare Clemson dead after it was blown out against the Bulldogs, but they are clearly not done yet as they enter ACC play. If Klubnik continues to put up these types of numbers, he’ll be right up there as a Heisman candidate at year’s end.

More Heisman Trophy betting odds

There’s a number of other candidates outside of the top 10 of the Heisman Trophy odds who could work their way into the mix come the season’s end. With plenty of football left to be played, watch for these players to potentially climb the list.
