Henry Ruggs serves as guest speaker at Hope for Prisoners event: 'I wish I could turn back the hands of time'

In 2021, NFL receiver Henry Ruggs saw his life turned upside down following a fatal car crash. Ruggs was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison as a result, on a charge of driving under the influence that resulted in death.
On Tuesday, Ruggs was granted a special release to speak to a group at a Hope for Prisoners event. Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz shared a video snippet of his speech, which focused on how sorry he was.
Asked what he would tell the group, Henry Ruggs knew where to take it. He began:
“One, that I wish I could turn back the hands of time,” Ruggs said. “I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something. I sincerely apologize for the, not only being a part of that situation, but the fact that — not to take a shot at you — but the fact that my face is always in the news. My face is always in the news so I have to be constantly reminded of the situation, be reminded of me and see those memories have to continue to rise because of all the fame and notoriety that I have, which I never asked for, I never liked.”
Henryu Ruggs is in the middle of his sentence, having plead guilty to a count of felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter back on May 10, 2023. He will be up for parole in 2026.
For now, though, he’s just trying to spread awareness about the dangers of making poor decisions. He knows them all too well.

“I would just tell them that, like I said, I deeply apologize for just being a part of that,” Ruggs said. “I wish that they could meet the real Henry Ruggs and not one who was just running away from everything.”
