Herschel Walker, the former NFL running back and Heisman Trophy winner, has been chosen by President-elect Donald Trump to be the ambassador to the Bahamas.

Trump, who will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on Jan. 20, 2025, made the announcement Tuesday night on Truth Social, his social media platform.

“Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad,” Trump wrote. “A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Great, Herschel has been a tireless advocate for youth sports. During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team.

“Congratulations Herschel! You will make Georgia, and our entire Nation, proud, because we know you will always put AMERICA FIRST!”

Herschel Walker continues second career in politics

Walker, 62, ran as a Republican looking to unseat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock for the U.S. Senate in Georgia two years ago with Trump’s endorsement. Warnock defeated Walker in a runoff election, 51.37% to 48.63%. Walker openly campaigned for Trump during the 2024 Presidential Election, in which Trump toppled his Democratic opponent in Vice President Kamala Harris. A Republican-led Senate will need to approve Walker’s nomination next year for him to officially become the ambassador to the Bahamas.

Walker, regarded as one of the greatest college tailbacks of all-time, rushed for 5,259 yards and 49 touchdowns in three seasons with the Georgia Bulldogs. A 1980 national champion and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner, Walker signed with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL) in 1983.

After three seasons with the Generals, the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. Walker played 12 seasons in the NFL, rushing for 8,225 yards and 61 touchdowns. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 1987 and ’88 with the Cowboys.
