Houston Texans fire OC Bobby Slowik
In one of the more surprising coaching decisions this offseason, the Houston Texans are reportedly moving on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport divulged.
The stunning move comes after Slowik was instrumental in C.J. Stroud’s first two seasons over his first two seasons in the NFL. In addition to Slowik, Rapoport noted that offensive line coach Chris Strausser is also out in Houston, as part of a myriad of changes from DeMeco Ryans, despite reaching the divisional round.
“A major change in Houston: The Texans are moving on from offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, sources say, after an up-and-down offensive season,” Rapoport posted on X. “Despite reaching the divisional round, coach DeMeco Ryans hopes for more. OL coach Chris Strausser is also out.”
Previously, Ryans stated that he would take some time to evaluate his coaching staff, and he wasn’t exactly complimentary of the job his now-former offensive coordinator did in 2024: “I think overall with Bobby, I saw some growth,” Ryans said, following the Texans’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, via ESPN. “I saw some improvement throughout the year.”
“… Overall, offensively, it wasn’t where we wanted to be. There were challenges throughout the year, that is every year. You have challenges, you have ups and downs where you try to figure out the course, who we have and how to make it work. We have to improve.”

Despite franchises around the league being interested in the offensive coordinator, it’s evident Ryans didn’t feel as if Stroud showed enough growth in 2024, and the Texans offense wasn’t progressing as it should’ve this past season. There’s too much potential for dominance within a weak AFC South at the moment, so the head coach isn’t taking any chances.
Moving forward, the job of being Ryans’ offensive coordinator will likely be a coveted one. With the defensive-minded coach at the helm of the franchise, an opportunity to prove to the NFL your mettle and offensive genius is afoot. It could be a stepping-stone to a head coaching gig, as Slowik secured multiple interviews over the past two off-seasons.
On the other hand, it’ll be interesting to see where Slowik lands. Teams are always looking for innovative offensive minds, and that’s what Slowik seemed to be in 2023. It’ll be up to decision makers around the league to decide if they believe in his first season on the job more than what transpired in 2024.
Regardless, the future seems bright in Houston under DeMeco Ryans, and Bobby Slowik, at 37-years-old, has plenty of time to land on his feet. It didn’t work out with the Texans in the end, but his coaching story seems to be just beginning.
