Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III may be on the move soon. According to a report from Jordan Schultz, multiple teams have reached out to the Texans and expressed interest in trading for Metchie.

The former Alabama star caught 16 passes for 158 yards last season, while appearing in 16 games. The 24-year-old was drafted in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Sources: Multiple teams have reached out to the #Texans to see if WR John Metchie III would be available in trade due to the plethora of receivers on their roster,” Schultz posted on Twitter. “It’s unclear if Houston would move him, but several teams are keeping a close eye. The former 2nd-round pick out of Alabama had 10 catches for 100 yards and a TD in the preseason.”

As Schultz alluded to, the Texans are loaded at receiver. Houston appears to have three starters locked in with Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins and Tank Dell. The Texans also have veteran wideout Robert Woods on their roster.

Metchie missed all of his rookie season in 2022 after a battle with cancer. His cancer diagnosis, which came in July of 2022, revealed that he had APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia), which is a form of Leukemia with the highest rates of long-term survival. After finding out about his condition, the second-rounder spent a month and a half in in-patient treatment. He followed that up with several months of outpatient chemotherapy.

During his last season at Alabama in 2021, Metchie had 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns, before Houston selected him No. 44 overall. The Texans drafted him despite a torn ACL very late in the 2021 season.

DeMeco Ryans discusses breakout preseason game from John Metchie

John Metchie had an outstanding preseason game against the New York Giants earlier this month, finishing with six receptions (seven targets) for 68 yards and a touchdown. Head coach DeMeco Ryans says everybody in Houston is pulling for Metchie and they all enjoyed watching him have a big game. Teammates had “genuine excitement” for Metchie after all he’s been through.

“I think he did a really, really nice job today,” Ryans said. “Just catching the football, making some big-time plays for us. It’s exciting to see Metchie make those types of plays. Nobody is more fired up than his teammates to see the other receivers and see their genuine excitement when he makes those plays. The entire team, as a whole, is pulling for him to do well. And he did a really nice job today.”
