The Houston Texans are trading offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. This a big addition for Washington, a team that reached the NFC Championship last season.

Rapoport said the Commanders are also receiving a 2026 fourth-round pick with Tunsil. The Texans will receive a 2025 third-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2026 fourth-round pick.

Laremy Tunsil has been with the Texans since 2019 after spending his first three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. During his time in Houston, Tunsil was named to the Pro Bowl five times, including the 2024 season. Tunsil was one of four Texans players named to the Pro Bowl last season, with the other three being cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., running back Joe Mixon and wide receiver Nico Collins.

One Texans player who is going to miss Tunsil is quarterback CJ Stroud. Tunsil’s play on the offensive line helped Stroud win the Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2023.

“Laremy is a big part of this offense, not only just by his play but just his presence as a leader,” Stroud said in September 2023, per Sports Illustrated. “His presence of really, really good experience. He’s been in the league a long time and he’s done it at a high level for a long time. So, just another comfort factor not only for myself but for our whole offense.”

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, the move to trade Tunsil came “as a surprise to several Texans players.” Wilson mentioned that an issue with Tunsil is that he tends to commit penalties, specifically false starts.

“Laremy is one of the best tackles in the league,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said last season. “Having him back out here working with us, he’s done a phenomenal job. He’s been a top tackle throughout his entire career, so anytime you get a guy like that of his caliber back, it helps our entire team.”

Tunsil will join a Commanders team that includes quarterback Jayden Daniels, the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year. Washington is hoping the addition of the former Ole Miss star will get the team over the hump and reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1991 season.
