The No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks will look continue their dominant run this season as they square off against Presbyterian in their opening matchup of the NCAA Tournament. After all, South Carolina didn’t receive the No. 1 overall seed on accident.
The Gamecocks are 32-0 this season, most recently defeating LSU 79-72 to claim their second-straight SEC Tournament title. The program has not lost a game since March 31, 2023, when the Gamecocks fell to Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the NCAA Tournament.

Spread aside, Presbyterian’s winning chances are slim. The Gamecocks won 10 straight games in conference play by double-digits. Nonetheless, it isn’t all dark clouds for Presbyterian. South Carolina will be without leading scorer and rebounder Kamilla Cardoso, who is unavailable due to a fighting ejection in the team’s win over LSU in the SEC Tournament Championship.
Dawn Staley isn’t focused on making history
South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley isn’t allowing any historical narratives influence her team’s focus. Ahead of South Carolina’s postseason run, Staley revealed her mindset on South Carolina jaw-dropping campaign.
“I really don’t even think about being undefeated,” Staley said. “I probably think more about being the No. 1 overall seed because it’s a really hard place to be. It means you played a really tough schedule. It means that you’ve been successful.
“It means that you’ve done something right for the majority of the season. For it to be us with a team that came into the season with so many holes and so many unknowns, I’m really proud they were able to get us back here.”
