Betting Odds
FanDuel spread: LSU -28.5 points
FanDuel over/under: 145.5 total points
Well, that is certainly a lopsided spread from FanDuel, but perhaps it’s warranted given how the Tigers performed in their opening game during last year’s NCAA Tournament, when they took down No. 14 seeded Hawaii by a final score of 73-50. Now, facing Rice, LSU is favored by five and a half more points than they beat their 14-seed by last season. Either way, it sounds like you can expect a blowout in the first round for the Tigers, at least according to the oddsmakers.
As for Rice, they are spearheaded by a triumvirate of double-digit per-game scorers. Leading the way is forward Malia Fisher averaging 13 points and seven rebounds per game. Then, Destiny Jackson serves as the primary point guard, averaging 3.5 assists along with just over 11 points a night. Lastly, Dominique Ennis rounds out Rice’s trio of top players.
Overall, this game ought to be a cake walk for LSU. Rice barely shoots 40% from the field, just over 31% from 3 and post one of the highest foul rates in the nation among women’s teams. If the Owls don’t get uncharacteristically hot, and Kim Mulkey just feeds Angel Reese, there’s about a snowball’s chance in Ecuador of Rice pulling the upset.
Las Vegas seems to agree, hence the nearly-30-point spread on the matchup.
