When DK Metcalf revealed his diet last offseason, it seemed hard to believe. The Seahawks receiver claimed to eat mostly candy, along with only one true meal per day.

But as strange as it might seem for an athlete of Metcalf’s caliber, it works for him. Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, who coached Metcalf at Ole Miss, revealed Monday on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning with Greg McElroy and Cole Cubelic that the receiver has always been that way.

“I’ll tell you this: he was that way for my three years and recruiting him as a senior in high school,” Freeze said. “He just, he was a freak and obviously trained very, very hard. But nutritionists to him were probably a nightmare.”

That candy-based diet seemed to work well for Metcalf in college as he finished his career with 67 catches for 1,228 yards and 14 touchdowns in 19 games. Freeze revealed that Metcalf liked to combine the candy with sugary drinks such as Nesquik.

“I think it was probably the strawberry milk,” he said. “One of those milk drinks. He does that with candy. It was the most odd combination I’ve ever seen.”

The Seahawks later selected Metcalf in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. His sugar consumption hasn’t seemed to slow him down in the pros, as he was named a Pro Bowler in just his second season.

Metcalf signed a three-year extension with the Seahawks last offseason to keep him through 2025. He followed that up with 90 catches for 1,048 yards and six touchdowns in 2022.

DK Metcalf explains his diet

“I eat one meal a day,” Metcalf revealed on Showtime Basketball with Kevin Garnett. “I eat one meal a day, drink one coffee, and eat, like, 3-4 bags of candy.”

Thankfully, former NBA champion Kevin Garnett asked Metcalf to clarify.

“I’m a gummy type of guy, like lifesavers,” Metcalf said. “Yesterday, I woke up, worked out, worked out again, came home, showered. I was hungry so I ran to Starbucks and got a coffee. It’s 12 so that’s going to hold me for like four hours. At about 4:30, I ordered some candy and water. I got the skittles gummies, then I got the lifesaver creations. They’re the same sized bag so I just mix ’em. That’ll hold me until like 8-9, then I eat dinner and go to sleep.”
