The Dallas Cowboys are officially without a backup quarterback after Cooper Rush signed with the Baltimore Ravens. Will Grier presents an option on the roster but another QB is needed. Reports have indicated Dallas will not sign one via free agency.

Late April is when the Cowboys could get their guy, at least according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He belives Dallas will take a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft and more likely not a late-round pick. Maybe not in the first round but Rapoport wonders if pick No. 44 is used on a QB.

“This, to me, says the Cowboys are going to go quarterback in the draft,” Rapoport said Monday. “And I wonder, how high are they going to go? I would be surprised at this point if they take a quarterback in the first round, I think everyone would. But what if it’s someone like Quinn Ewers in the second round?

“A quarterback who’s really talented, who they know well, who might not have to play for a couple years but in three years, might end up being someone who is certainly talented enough to be the starting quarterback.”

Ewers was just the example used by Rapoport, citing some familiarity there. Playing not too far away for the Texas Longhorns, Ewers’ last college football game was actually inside AT&T Stadium.

But there could be plenty of Day 2 quarterback options if Dallas decides to take a quarterback. “Household names” as Rapoport describes them — not something you can normally say in the second and third rounds of an average NFL Draft.

“This at least, to me, means the Cowboys are considering taking one, if not Thursday, maybe on Friday,” Rapoport said. “And then you’re talking about some household names and you’re talking about some really, really talented quarterbacks.”

The Cowboys extended Dak Prescott last offseason, locking him up for the next four years. Prescott will be through his age-35 season at the end. Financial commitment is certainly there but some kind of succession plan is needed. Maybe a similar plan to what the Green Bay Packers did with Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love could be put into place.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper just shook up his top 10 quarterback rankings after the NFL Combine. If Dallas does wind up using a valuable pick on the position, there is a good chance the player comes somewhere from this list.
