The Chicago Bears are overhauling the offense with a new coordinator and potentially a new quarterback, depending on what they choose to do with the first overall pick. Amid those important decisions, the team recently interviewed Kliff Kingsbury for the open coordinator role.

It’s an interesting move, as Kliff Kingsbury has been an NFL head coach and is currently working at USC as the team’s offensive analyst working with quarterbacks. He also had Chicago come to him in Los Angeles for the interview, which is a move that NFL insider Ian Rapoport praised.

“First, the Kingsbury part of this,” Ian Rapoport said. “I love every part of them interviewing Kliff Kingsbury. First of all, he made them fly out to LA, which is such a baller move.”

“Like, ‘You wanna talk to me, come on. I’ll be here if you’ll be here. Then we’ll talk.’ I was joking today, but I was actually not joking. Kliff Kingsbury has made so much money as a head coach and off the field I’m surprised he still wants to coach. I would be in like Tahiti or something or like I’d be on the golf course.”

Much was initially made about the decision to interview Kingsbury. In particular, because he currently works at USC with Caleb Williams. A former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Williams is the presumed first overall pick. So, it was a chance to learn something about their possible first choice in the draft.

“So, I like every part of this interview because nobody knows more right now about Caleb Williams than Kliff Kingsbury. The Bears have a decision to make, a franchise-altering decision. So, yes, they get a look at a guy who I think would be a great offensive coordinator,” Rapoport said.

“And, either with the Bears or with someone else, Kliff Kingsbury is very, very good at the football, but it is at the least an awesome opportunity to scout a potential number one pick. To go out to LA, to find out everything you can about Caleb Williams. I think it’s perfect whether you hire him or not.”

Bears’ decision to interview Kliff Kingsbury is ‘intriguing’ given tie to Caleb Williams

NFL insider Adam Schefter broke down how interesting that tie between Kliff Kingsbury and Caleb Williams is, given the context of the interview Kingsbury had with the Bears on NFL Live.

“What makes this so intriguing is that Kliff Kingsbury worked at USC directly with Caleb Williams. The two have a good relationship. The Bears have the No. 1 overall pick and obviously, strongly will consider taking Caleb Williams. And now, if nothing else, they’ll be able to sit down with Kingsbury and pick his brain about Caleb Williams, what it might be like to work with him, which would reflect on what they potentially could do with Justin Fields. Lots of ramifications to this one, single interview,” Schefter said.

“Now, it’s just an interview. Let’s see what happens if he winds up getting the offensive coordinator job in Chicago. That would lead to a lot more speculation. But for now, the Bears certainly are keeping all options open and exploring all avenues about what to do with their offensive coordinator job and the No. 1 overall pick.”
