Ian Rapoport reveals where Cowboys stand with Deion Sanders amid coaching search
A few NFL teams are working through the hiring process, arguably none more high stakes than the Dallas Cowboys. A few interviews have taken place since firing Mike McCarthy, talking to Kellen Moore and Robert Saleh. Leslie Frazier is thought to be involved as well. But that trio is not as widely publicly discussed as Deion Sanders.
There has not been an official interview set up and according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, one never may take place. On Sunday, Rapoport said he would be surprised if the Cowboys interviewed Sanders for the job. There have been conversations, specifically with Jerry Jones, but appears to be nothing more.
“Nothing scheduled yet with Coach Prime,” Rapoport said. “I would be surprised, probably very surprised, if something did in fact get scheduled. But that won’t stop everyone talking about it until he signs a new deal with Colorado.”
Sanders just wrapped up his second season with Colorado, improving to a 9-3 regular season record. Speculation about making a jump to the NFL has been there for some time, even being linked to the Las Vegas Raiders for a short period. Dallas is just the latest, with many citing the great relationship between Sanders and Jones.
Rapoport mentions Sanders attempting to get a new deal at Colorado. The head coach recently was reportedly trying to get an influx of cash for NIL and his assistant coaches. He was supposedly “met with resistance” on the idea.

“One thing to watch following Jerry Jones and his initial discussions with Deion Sanders,” Jane Slater wrote on X. “Two people with knowledge of the situation tell me Sanders approached Colorado AD Rick George Tuesday about additional money for NIL and his staff. He was met with resistance.
“The University of Colorado would neither confirm or deny the information when I reached out. Deion Sanders didn’t respond when reached multiple times for comment.”
One thing is for sure — conversations surrounding Sanders and the Cowboys will continue until a final resolution is made. Dallas is one of the most discussed NFL teams out there, coaching search or not. Adding in a huge personality like Sanders only adds fuel to the fire — something Jones enjoys seeing play out.
However, Rapoport is casting doubt on anything of substance coming together.
