Indianapolis Colts sign Kellen Mond amid Anthony Richardson injury
The Indianapolis Colts have signed quarterback Kellen Mond to their practice squad after a workout Tuesday, per NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The signing comes after starting quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an AC joint sprain on his throwing shoulder in the 23-16 Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Mond, a 2021 third-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings out of Texas A&M, spent the 2022 season with the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland released him two weeks before the 2023 season began, before claiming him off waivers the following day. He was released again four days later as part of final roster cuts. Mond briefly appeared in one game for Minnesota in 2021, completing 2-of-3 passes for five yards.
Mond had a prolific career with the Aggies, throwing for 9,661 yards with 93 total touchdowns and 27 interceptions in 46 games. He is one of three SEC quarterbacks to record over 9,000 career passing yards and over 1,500 rushing yards.
Kellen Mond to sit behind veteran backups
Mond will serve as the third quarterback in Indianapolis behind Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger. Minshew replaced Richardson against Tennessee, completing 11-of-14 passes for 155 yards. Minshew got the start in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens, leading the Colts to a 22-19 overtime victory. With Richardson expected to miss at least a month with the shoulder injury, it’ll be Minshew’s team moving forward.

“He’s an elite processor of the game, and when you’ve got a guy that can process the game quickly and make quick decisions,” head coach Steichen said after the game, via the team’s website. “He’s really good, he’s accurate. He knows where to go with the football at the right time and the right place… He’s been awesome for us.”
While Minshew is adamant this is Richardson’s team, he remains grateful for another opportunity to start in the NFL.
“I’m grateful for every opportunity I get,” Minshew said. “Grateful for coach [Steichen] for bringing me here, grateful for the team for letting me do my thing, and yeah, just excited to keep moving forward.”
