San Francisco 49ers Isaac Guerendo was carted off the field Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. He suffered the injury after a scary tackle during the first series of the game.

After Isaac Guerendo left the field, the 49ers announced that he had been ruled out of the game due to knee and ankle injuries. Guerendo was one of the few 49ers running backs who was healthy as Christian McCaffrey (knee), Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and Jordan Mason (ankle) are currently on injured reserve.

The 49ers drafted Guerendo in the fourth round of the 2024 draft. In his rookie season, the former Lousiville Cardinals star rushed for 420 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries. He also caught 15 passes for 152 yards.

In December, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan talked about Guerendo’s growth during the season. “I think it takes guys some time. You start to get a feel for it the more, if you’ve got the right stuff, the more you get reps, the more you can adjust to it,” Shanahan said, per the 49ers’ official website. “How hard you’ve got to hit stuff, how quick those holes close, how when there is a hole how you have to hit it full-speed and can’t hesitate at all, or it closes like that. We’ve seen that stuff get better in practice and we’ve seen it carry over into games.”

Isaac Guerendo made a big impact in his first career start

“That’s one of those things that just comes with reps. The more reps you get, the more you get the feel for it,” Guerendo said. “The more (reps) I’ve gotten, I think I’ve caught onto that. That’s something that has helped me and will continue to help me.”

Guerendo made his first career start against the Chicago Bears on Dec. 8 and rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-13 victory.

“I think he is ready to go,” head coach Shanahan said before the game. “(He) did some decent things when he started out. He didn’t get a lot of carries, had some ups and downs but got better through everything. Then, when he got the bulk of the carries, I want to say some more versus Seattle, he only got better and he’s gotten better throughout the year. So, I think he’s ready for this.”
