Jake Ferguson injury update: Severity revealed after Dallas Cowboys TE takes big hit from teammate in practice

Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson is dealing with a back contusion, per Todd Archer of ESPN. Ferguson left Thursday’s practice after being on the receiving end of friendly fire.
Ferguson took a shot from linebacker Kenneth Murray in what appeared to be a red zone drill. Lined up on the right side of the formation, Ferguson came back across the middle. Murray used his shoulder to knock his teammate down from behind.
Fortunately for the Cowboys, they dodged a bullet with their starting tight end as the injury is nothing serious. Ferguson was one of three Cowboys who left practice early Thursday. The others were running back Jaydon Blue and offensive lineman Dakoda Shepley.
Cowboys make big investment in Jake Ferguson
Ferguson, a 38-game starter over the last three seasons, signed a four-year, $52 million extension with $30 million guaranteed last month. The deal made him the highest-paid tight end in franchise history, and the seventh highest-paid player at his position in the NFL.
Ferguson, 26, is coming off a season where he struggled, only catching 59 passes for 494 yards. He failed to get to the end zone for the first time in his career. Ferguson previously developed great chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott back in 2023, compiling 761 yards and five touchdowns on 71 receptions.

Injuries were a factor last season, as he dealt with a knee issue and a concussion. Ferguson is motivated to return back to form in 2025.
“My knee hurt for sure, the concussion was weird, but I’ve said this before, if I’m on the field I should be able to give it my all,” Ferguson said in June. “I definitely wasn’t satisfied with how I played the whole year last year.
“I don’t think I’ve ever played a full season and not scored a touchdown, so that was something I came into this offseason really working on, just really tried to dial in on that and make sure I was lights out.”
