Jake Ferguson knee injury update: Jerry Jones addresses Cowboys TE’s status for Saints game
Jerry Jones gave an update on Jake Ferguson‘s injury ahead of the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints. While appearing on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said he’s optimistic the veteran tight end can play on Sunday.
“We really did dodge a bullet,” Jones said, per Pro Football Talk. “He’s very excited about playing, I saw him right after our meetings yesterday and he was excited about it. Like everybody, I know he was worried sick when it initially happened. . . . It would have been a blow and we’re relieved about it.”
Ferguson had three catches for 15 yards against the Cleveland Browns in the Cowboys’ season opener on Sunday before leaving the game with a knee injury. It was later revealed that Ferguson suffered a sprained MCL.
The injury happened in the third quarter, and Ferguson was seen walking out of the locker without any anyone’s aid, and without a knee brace or crutches when the game ended. On Monday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said Ferguson would be working with the “return to play” group this week in practice.

“Not even going to begin to talk about what would we miss, [because]I think we’ve dodged a big one,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said, per the team’s official website. “… Just talking to him, he gave me a lot of confidence that he’ll be okay, and he’ll be able to respond. And whether it’s nothing or whether it’s a couple of weeks, I know that, yeah, I can’t even think about what we would miss from that guy.
“Just his mentality, what he brings to the game where we’ve grown and our connection. We’ll be fine. He’ll be fine.”
Ferguson, 25, is coming off a 2023 season where he caught 71 passes for 761 yards and five touchdowns. He was selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft after playing college football at Wisconsin.
