The scary injuries to Tua Tagovailoa this week have caused major concern across the NFL. On a smaller scale, though, this changes the plans of the Miami Dolphins in the near future. They have already announced that he will not be available to play this weekend against the New York Jets. With no set timetable for his return, this has led the franchise to start looking elsewhere at QB.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, Miami has worked out several prospects to prepare for Tagovailoa’s absence. The biggest name amongst the list is former Georgia QB and two-year pro Jake Fromm.

“With Tua Tagovailoa sidelined indefinitely, the Dolphins worked out QBs Ben DiNucci, Jake Fromm and Reid Sinnett, per the wire. They signed Sinnett to the practice squad,” said Pelissero.

Fromm has spent the majority of his early NFL career bouncing around different teams, practice squads, and camps. This all comes after three years with the Bulldogs where he threw for over 8,200 yards and 78 touchdowns with a 36-7 record. The next stop on his journey now leads him to South Beach with the Dolphins.

The report also included workouts for Dinucci, a former Pittsburgh and James Madison QB, and Sinnett, a former San Diego QB. Sinnett was added to the Dolphin’s practice squad as well.

Tagovailoa may not be out for too long but the franchise still wants to be cautious. They have Teddy Bridgewater and Skylar Thompson already, but bringing in these other QBs like Fromm suggests the team wants to reinforce that position until Tagovailoa returns.

Tua Tagovailoa will not play against Jets

Tua Tagovailoa will not suit up for the Miami Dolphins’ game in New York against the Jets this coming weekend after suffering a head injury during last Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

As a refresher, Tagovailoa was initially injured in Miami’s game against Buffalo two weekends ago. He got up wobbling after a play, but was ruled to have had a back issue, not a concussion. A few days later, Tua was on the wrong side of another scary play, this time being slammed into the Cincinnati field during a sack midway through the second quarter. He did not return to that game.

Ahead of the Jets game, head coach Mike McDaniel reported Monday that Tua Tagovailoa will not play against the Jets. Here was that report from Ian Rapoport:

#Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel announces that QB Tua Tagovailoa will be out this week’s game against the #Jets. Still in the concussion protocol.”

However, McDaniel noted that Tagovailoa’s MRI did not suggest any major issues.

“McDaniel confirms that Tua’s MRI came back clean,” Ruthie Polinsky wrote in a tweet.

For more background on the whole injury ordeal for Tua, here were some of McDaniel’s comments welcoming an investigation into the initial injury while maintaining that the team staff and medical team did everything the right way:

“I said before, I’m very very confident. The only reason I’m confident is because of everything that I’ve been around since I’ve been here, with regard to our medical staff and how they go and do their business. But as far as the inquiry that is going on, from the league, and from the PA, we’re very happy to comply with all of those things. And we’d much rather be as transparent as possible. So we’re happy that all that’s taking place. We do not have anything to hide from that standpoint at all.”

Hopefully Tua Tagovailoa will be back slinging the rock sometime soon. But not before he is totally, 100% healthy.
