Jalen Milroe announces plans to throw at NFL Combine, undecided on 40-yard dash

The annual debate about whether or not to throw at the NFL Combine is seen as a yearly litmus test for NFL-bound quarterbacks. Do they bet on themselves and take their chances at a potential off day, or opt-out to throw under more favorable conditions at their respective Pro Day events?
Count Jalen Milroe among those betting on himself, after the dual-threat former Alabama quarterback confirmed his plan to throw during Saturday’s quarterback-specific workout at the 2025 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, according to reporters onsite Friday morning. That said, Milroe remains undecided on running the 40-yard dash, where he’s expected to be among the fastest at his position.
“Yeah, I’m going to throw tomorrow,” Milroe said to open Friday morning’s media availability inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
Milroe’s decision to throw could end up paying major dividends, especially with Miami‘s Cam Ward and Colorado‘s Shedeur Sanders — the Top 2 projected quarterbacks in the 2025 draft class according to most experts — opting out and instead throwing at their respective Pro Days. Of course, a difficult day Saturday could also doom Milroe’s tenuous draft stock after struggling somewhat during Senior Bowl practices earlier this month in Mobile.
Milroe is expected to be a Day 2 selection as one of several quarterbacks considered among the second-best tier of QBs in the 2025 class. Of course, that could all change with a strong performance Saturday.
Miami QB Cam Ward announces he will not throw at NFL Scouting Combine
Miami quarterback Cam Ward will not be throwing this weekend in Indianapolis. That is the news that surfaced on Friday morning.
While at the podium this morning, Ward shared he will not be throwing as part of his appearance at the NFL Combine. That’s with it having little impact on his stock and with another opportunity to do so later on in the process at his pro day.

“You know, me throwing here is not going to move me in no type of way,” Ward said. “You know, I’m just excited to throw at my pro day to, you know, the best receiving corps in the country.”
Friday was the day for interviews by the media for the quarterbacks at the combine after meetings and such the past three days. They’re then set to take the field tomorrow for measuring and their workout on Saturday. However, Ward won’t be among them for the throwing aspect of the combine. Neither will Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders per reporting earlier in the week.
This is all pretty standard, though, when it comes to the top quarterbacks in an NFL Draft. They’ll just meet with teams and the media before taking measurements, but not taking part in too much on-field work, while in Indy.
The Hurricanes held their pro day last year around mid-March. That would suggest around another month or so before Ward spins it for scouts for his evaluation as one of the top projected picks in April.
