Jalen Ramsey, Miami Dolphins agree to three-year, $24.1 million contract extension
The Miami Dolphins and star cornerback Jalen Ramsey have agreed to terms on a three-year, $72.3 million contract extension, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
At $24.1 million per year, Ramsey, 29, becomes the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history for the second time in his eight-year career. In 2020, the Los Angeles Rams signed Ramsey to a five-year, $105 million extension worth $71.2 million guaranteed. It was then the biggest contract ever given out to a defensive back.
Ramsey’s new deal tops the four-year, $96 million extension Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain signed Wednesday. At the time, it made Surtain the highest-paid defensive back in league history. That title now belongs to Ramsey — again — who continues to produce at a high level as he prepares to turn 30 next month.
Ramsey is coming off his first season with the Dolphins after coming over via trade from the Rams. After suffering a torn meniscus in training camp, he made his Miami debut in Week 8. He appeared in 10 games, tallying 22 tackles (18 solo), three interceptions and five passes defended. Ramsey earned his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl nod. The three-time All-Pro allowed 20 receptions on 36 targets, per Pro Football Focus.

Jalen Ramsey status for Week 1 vs. Jaguars up in the air
In terms of annual cornerback salaries, Ramsey’s deal places him above Surtain, the Green Bay Packers’ Jaire Alexander, the Atlanta Falcons’ A.J. Terrell and the Cleveland Browns’ Denzel Ward.
Ramsey is currently nursing a hamstring injury and has not participated in practice this week. His status is uncertain for Sunday’s Week 1 home contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Mike McDaniel said he expects Ramsey to return to practice in some capacity Friday.
“I’ve never been prouder of a player not practicing, like honestly. No puffery,” head coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday. “He’s just making me proud because he knows how important he is to this team. And what he’s looking to accomplish with the team as a captain. … I know he’s doing everything he can today and there weren’t any setbacks today.”
