Report: Jameis Winston scheduled to visit with New York Giants

Former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston is scheduled to visit with the New York Giants, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The Giants are currently doing due diligence while waiting on Aaron Rodgers.

“Free-agent QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to visit the Giants on Tuesday, per sources,” Pelissero wrote on Twitter. “While the New York braintrust waits for Aaron Rodgers’ decision, it‘s continuing to visit with alternatives: Joe Flacco, Russell Wilson and now Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick.”

Ironically, Winston and the Giants have been linked. You have to go back to Super Bowl LIX media week as Winston worked for FOX during the festivities.

Winston asked Eagles running back Saquon Barkley where he should sign this March when he is a free agent. Barkley threw a little shade at his old team, saying New York needs a quarterback.

“Would I really sign with the Giants? Absolutely!” Winston told NJ Advance Media. “I want to keep playing and do what I do best.”

The Giants went 3-14 this season, finishing last in the NFC East and currently hold the No. 3 overall pick. New York is a candidate to draft a quarterback if they land one of Cam Ward (Miami) or Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) in the NFL Draft.

But Winston likes the situation due to some young talent and head coach Brian Daboll, who was retained despite two straight seasons of missing the playoffs. GM Joe Schoen is also back.

“I have a ton of respect for coach Brian Daboll, the things he does offensively,” Winston said. “I think we have a young— woah! They have a young roster. But they have a young roster that’s ready to win. They’re ready to bounce back. I know they’re hungry over there.”

Winston started seven of 12 games with Cleveland this past season, throwing for 2,121 yards on 61.1-percent passing along with 13 touchdowns to 12 interceptions in place of injured starter Deshawn Watson. Across his 10-year NFL career, Winson has compiled 24,225 passing yards, 1,297 rushing yards and 166 combined touchdowns.

He’s played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Browns in his career. A former No. 1 overall pick (2015) out of Florida State, there have been highs and lows to Winston’s 10 year career in the pros.

He was a Pro Bowler as a rookie and led the NFL in passing yards back in 2019 (5,109 yards). He also threw 30 touchdowns, as well as 30 interceptions, that season.

At Florida State, Winston won a BCS National Championship in 2013 and finished his two years as a starter with 7,964 yards, 65 touchdowns, 28 interceptions and a 66% completion percentage. He also won the Heisman Trophy in 2013.
