Jameson Williams explains how he can fit into Lions offensive system

The Lions made Jameson Williams a priority. Detroit traded up on Thursday in the 2022 NFL Draft, making the former Alabama star the No. 12 overall selection. Even if he doesn’t contribute immediately due to the knee injury he suffered in the 2022 College Football Playoff National Championship Game, the Lions believed it was important to secure Williams for their long-term future.

However, Williams sees himself fitting in well during the short-term. According to the former Crimson Tide speedster, he’ll do some big things in the franchise’s offensive system.

“I’m excited to join the offense,” started Williams. “I feel like we can do pretty big things. We got Amon-Ra [St. Brown], D.J. [Chark], with the addition to the running back game. I just feel like we could do a lot of things.”

Evidently, Williams believes he can hit the ground running. The two wide receivers the former Alabama star mentioned — Amon Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark — both possess immense potential. During his rookie season, St. Brown came on strong during the second half, while Chark showed off his blazing-speed on multiple occasions during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While the Lions may not have their quarterback of the future, they have a solid place-holder in Jared Goff. The former No. 1 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft has shown flashes since being traded to Detroit from the Los Angeles Rams, and he can get the ball in the hands of his star wide receivers.

The Lions may not win the Super Bowl next season, but they’ll be fun to watch. Jameson Williams and Detroit could surprise some people throughout the 2022 season.

Over the first two seasons of his college football career, Williams didn’t find the field often enough with Ohio State. During his Buckeyes career, the star wide receiver only caught 15 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns. However, his story was completely rewritten since joining the Crimson Tide.

In his lone season with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Williams caught 75 passes for 1,507 yards — adding 15 touchdowns. The speedster has gone from an afterthought to a future NFL Draft first-round selection.

During the season, his 1,507 receiving yards ranked fifth in the country. His 15 touchdown catches ranked second in the country. Last but not least, here’s a stat that demonstrates his highly explosive nature: Williams had more touchdowns of 70 yards, 60 yards, 50 yards, 40 yards, 30 yards, and 20 yards, than any other receiver in the FBS.

Not surprisingly, nearly every NFL Draft analyst in the country has unanimously raved about Williams’ potential at the NFL level. ESPN’s Todd McShay and Mel Kiper have both been smitten by the uber-talented receiver in the past few months and that praise is well warranted. Blessed with 4.3 speed, there was simply not another receiver in the 2022 NFL Draft that can do the things in the open field that Williams can.
