As wide receivers began to go off the board in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions decided that Jameson Williams was a player they wanted to come away with. The Lions moved up from No. 32 all the way up to No. 12, and used that pick to select Williams out of Alabama.

Following his selection in the draft, Williams explained where he’s at in his recovery from his torn ACL, which he suffered during the National Championship Game.

“I’m 13 weeks from surgery, I’ve just been doing regular movements,” Williams said. “I’m just getting back to it, but I should be ready to go by training camp. Shooting for training camp.”

As far as any mental hurdles following his injury, Williams said that those went away pretty quickly. He said that it was tough initially, but after about a week or so, he was fine mentally.

“I only had like mental problems for like the first week,” said Williams. “After that, it was over with.”

Williams impressed in his lone season at Alabama, hauling in 79 receptions for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns. He averaged 19.9 yards per reception, and established himself as one of the top offensive weapons in all of college football.

Williams could be a great investment for the Lions

Even though he might not be 100% back right out of the gate, Williams was a player that the Lions were willing to invest in long-term. Once he returns to the field, he is likely to see a major role right away in an offense that is in need of playmakers. Amon-Ra St. Brown led the team in receiving last year during a breakout season, and tight end T.J. Hockenson was an important factor in the passing game as well.

When ESPN NFL Draft expert looks at the Lions’ decision to trade up for Williams, he views it as the top move of the first round on Thursday night.

“Detroit Lions trading up for WR Jameson Williams,” McShay said. “The Lions badly needed receiver help, and Williams is a burner with soft hands and elusiveness with the ball in his hands. Detroit started the night by getting my No. 1 overall prospect in Hutchinson, and then they were able to move way up from No. 32 to No. 12 without dealing an additional first-rounder. That’s fantastic work. And it’s a great landing spot for Williams, too. No need to rush him back from the torn ACL in his left knee. Sit back and wait, and get ready for big plays for years to come.”
