Jason Garrett addresses Mike McCarthy’s future in Dallas, Jerry Jones’ mindset
Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett believes Mike McCarthy can be with the team next season if one thing happens. During the Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC, Garrett said McCarthy could remain as the Cowboys head coach if they win the next three games.
“I don’t think Jerry Jones has made up his mind yet. I think he’s going to evaluate these last three games and make a decision from there,” Jason Garrett said, per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “There was an assumption coming into this season that McCarthy’s future would be based on playoff success.
“They’re 6-8, out of the playoffs, and the team has regressed. So I see these last three games as critical. If they win three to go 9-8 and end on a strong note, I could see them continuing. But if they lose three against tough opponents and finish 6-11, I think that’s a harder sell to the Dallas Cowboys’ fan base.”
The Cowboys were eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday, but the next three games are interesting for them. The team could have some of the younger players see more action, but with McCarthy’s future cloudy, winning the next two or three games could give the momentum heading into 2025.

Mike McCarthy reacts to Cowboys winning the last three of four games
That said, the Cowboys have been playing better football recently, winning three of the last four games ahead of Sunday’s contest against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last Sunday, the Cowboys took down the Carolina Panthers 30-14 to win their sixth game of the year.
“We’ve always been a resilient bunch,” McCarthy said after the win over the Panthers, per the Cowboys’ official website. “…[But] we have Tampa Bay coming in next and [we still have] too many penalties. We have to take care of the football, but the takeaways are outstanding, and thought the defense really set the tone for us in the first half.”
When asked about the playoffs, McCarthy said, “I’m a realist, so I take a lot of pride in the commitment that we have to one another. It shows up from Monday through Saturday, and that is the hardest part. On Sundays, I mean, this is what we live for — to get out here and compete against other other NFL teams. I just love the way they stay after it every single day, and that’s a credit to the coaches and the players.”
