Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided to push all of his chips in on his quarterback, Dak Prescott, on Sunday. The Cowboys and Prescott agreed to a record deal, four years, $240 million. The deal makes him the highest paid player in NFL history. The deal also includes $231 million guaranteed.

On Sunday night on Football Night in America on NBC, former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett shared his thoughts on the record deal.

“I am so happy for him. He represents everything you want in a football player. Leader of your football team. There’s a lot of distraction in Dallas. There has been for a long, long time. He’s amazing. He stands up there at the podium and just handles all that stuff the right way. You talk about leadership. His is the best that there is. And the guys around him, they love to play for him. Again, on display today in Cleveland,” Garrett explained.

The chatter on the broadcast eventually circled back to Prescott. Garrett once again adamantly defended the Cowboys signal-caller.

He also defended him against “clowns” in the clip below.

“But back to Dak (Prescott), he just plays the game at a high level. I hear these clowns on TV say he’s overrated, he’s not in the top 10. Watch the game! He’s an incredible football player. Great leader for that team,” Garrett explained on NBC’s Football Night in America.

More on Dak Prescott and his record setting contract

Prescott’s contract has an average annual value of $60 million. That surpasses both Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow who have an AAV of $55 million at the quarterback position. Thanks to the new contract, the market has been reset for quarterbacks in the NFL.

Dak Prescott has spent his entire career to this point with the Dallas Cowboys after being selected in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State. Immediately, he made his impact felt, and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2016. Since then, Prescott has been a three-team Pro Bowl selection and the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.
