The Seattle Seahawks went through with their much-anticipated reveal for this season’s throwback uniforms. Starring in the video reveal for the team is first-year receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

The theme for the throwback jerseys is the 90s, which is ironic since Smith-Njigba wasn’t even born until 2002.

In the video, the Seahawks’ first-rounder wakes up in bed fully dressed in the throwback uniform. He walks through his room, which is clearly 90s-themed, complete with a Nintendo 64 and cube-style desktop computer, and puts on his cassette player before donning his receiver’s gloves.

The new jerseys and alternate helmets have the original retro Seahawks logo, as well as the iconic royal blue and apple green. The team notes that members of the 12 will notice a special commemorative patch inside the neckline of every Throwback jersey. That patch is a nod to the Seahawks’ home stadium from its inaugural season in 1976 until 1999 – the Kingdome.

Seahawks opt for 90s-themed throwbacks

Clicking the webpage attached to the Seahawks’ reveal Tweet takes fans to a page that mimics the old dial-up access loading page. The team then explains why they chose the 90s as their theme.

“Why the 90s? A pop culture revolution took off in the Seattle region in the 90s, stormed the nation’s music scene, forever transformed the world’s technology landscape, and changed our relationship with coffee,” the description reads. “Rock icons Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains all exploded in the early-90s from small venues like Re-Bar, El Corazon and The Central Saloon. Now tech giant Microsoft introduced platforms we can’t live without, and Starbucks became synonymous with coffee and created meaningful and lasting relationships between coffee drinkers everywhere and their baristas. Seattle left its mark on the world in the 90s and changed the course of history forever.

“When the Kingdome was closed after the 1999 season, the end of a special era in Seahawks history ushered in a new era of championship caliber football in Seattle.”

The Seahawks fans exited the 90s and entered a new era of winning. They had three Super Bowl appearances and the second-most playoff wins in the NFC between 2000 and 2022.

Seahawks fans can already buy the throwback jersey from the online pro shop. They have jerseys for all the top offensive weapons, including D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, as well as rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Seattle selected Smith-Njigba with the No. 20 overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
