Coaching is a family business when it comes to the Harbaughs. Now, as Jim makes his return to the National Football League, he’s officially bringing his son with him.

Jay Harbaugh will be joining his father in Inglewood as a member on the staff with the Los Angeles Chargers. Reports did not specify but it is expected that he will take the role as the special teams coordinator for the franchise – the same duties that he had over the past four years at Michigan.

Harbaugh spent all nine seasons of his father’s tenure in Ann Arbor on the Wolverines’ staff. He spent most of that time working on special teams as the assistant or the coordinator for the unit. However, he also got to work with the tight ends, running backs, and, most recently, safeties.

During his time with the group, Harbaugh coached some of the better special teams in college football. Whether overall or individual honors, Michigan saw several recognitions and records for their kickers and punters, in their return game, and for their coverage off punts and kicks.

Harbaugh started his career as a graduate assistant working with special teams at Oregon State from 2008 to 2011.

After that, Harbaugh got his first opportunity at the professional level as an intern in the scouting department during his father’s first stop with the San Francisco 49ers. He then spent three years with his uncle, John Harbaugh, as a quality control coach on offense for the Baltimore Ravens.

Jim Harbaugh was clearly going to bring several people with him to SoFi Stadium, including at least a couple from Michigan. The most obvious was his own flesh and blood with Jay now coming with him to the next level.
