This year, Kyle Larson attempted the Indianapolis 500, Coca-Cola 600 double. Things did not go according to plan, though. However, his showing in 2024 proved to NASCAR icons Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick that Larson is the real deal.

The two NASCAR Cup Series champions talked about Kyle Larson this week. Jeff Gordon was the guest on Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour podcast.

Qualifying in the top-6, running near the front, and even some mistakes along the way. But it was that P18 showing that proved to others that he can get the job done.

“In my mind, it’s realistic, like he can go win the Indy 500,” Harvick said to Gordon. “I don’t think you guys would be doing it if you didn’t think he could win it, right? It’s not a show.”

That’s when the Hendrick Vice Chairman chimed in.

“He blew everybody away this year. I’ve always been impressed with his talent, and it’s because he’s so versatile,” Gordon shared. “It’s not just what he does in a stock car. I think there are a lot of great stock car drivers out there. But I think for him to be able to jump from a stock car to a dirt sprint car to a late model and then go and get into an IndyCar and be good at it pretty quick – that’s a unique skill that not everybody has.”

It is likely the reason why Kyle Larson believes he is the best driver in the world. He would put his talents across multiple disciplines even up against F1’s Max Verstappen.

Kyle Larson impressed everyone at Indy

Continuing to talk about Larson and his chances to win the Indy 500, Jeff Gordon went back to this year’s race. It was one where Larson impressed at every turn, up until his pit road penalty that cost him a top-10 or potential top-5 finish.

The driver knows how to turn heads.

“So, it’s super impressive and even all the IndyCar people on the team and around that industry were super impressed as well,” Gordon continued. “And I mean, it’s expected that as a rookie you’re going to make some mistakes, and I think Kyle looked back on it and said, ‘Man, if I cleaned up a couple of those things, I’m top three or four at the Indy 500.’ So, yeah I think that certainly helped that decision in doing it again.”

Mistakes aside, the talent was on display. He went up against the best in IndyCar, a discipline he is unfamiliar with, and competed. If weather cooperates in 2025, we could see a historic day of racing.
