Jerry Jeudy: Report Jets nixed trade for him due to Madden rating is ‘fake news’
Jerry Jeudy almost became a member of the New York Jets over the offseason, but franchise owner Woody Johnson reportedly shut down a possible trade for the wide receiver because of his Madden rating, according to The Athletic.
The story led to an immense amount of backlash for Johnson and the Jets, with the NFL world clowning the franchise for a video game reportedly influencing real-life football decisions. On Friday, the Cleveland Browns wide receiver responded to the report, stating that he doesn’t believe it’s true, but he does find the idea of it humorous.
“To be honest, I don’t believe it. I think that’s fake news,” Jeudy said, via Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “For real, why would somebody look at Madden ratings? Be real. I don’t think that’s real, but it is funny.”
To add insult to injury for the Jets, Jeudy’s Madden NFL 25 rating is 83 at the moment. If Jeudy was on their team right now, he would be the second-highest-rated receiver on the roster only behind Garrett Wilson (86). He would also be one of the 10 highest-rated players on the Jets roster. It’s easy to see why Jeudy is able to laugh the entire ordeal off.

All told, Jeudy spent his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos and had his best season in 2022, catching 67 passes for 972 yards and six touchdowns. This past offseason, the 25-year-old was traded to the Cleveland Browns, and he has put together a strong 2024 season, catching 70 passes for 1,052 yards and four touchdowns.
While he’s choosing not to believe in the report, Jerry Jeudy is thankful he’s with the Browns instead of the Jets nonetheless: “I’m glad that I’m here,” the Browns star added. “I’m glad my Madden rating was low. Yeah, got me here. … “I feel like I belong [in Cleveland].
“I’ve been working my tail off through this whole off season and now it’s finally showing being put in a position I’m in now. Now it’s time to take advantage of every opportunity coming forward.”
